Sir Steve Redgrave celebrates Olympic anniversary with Gleeds Warrington in charity triathlon
Gleeds Ambassador and five times Olympic champion, Sir Steve Redgrave, celebrates 15 years since his final gold medal at the Sydney Olympics on Wednesday 23rd September. Redgrave will commemorate this special milestone, which also coincided with his retirement from professional sport, by getting back on the water at Lake Windermere on Friday 25th September.
In his role as Ambassador for Gleeds, the UK Olympic Champion will be participating in a fundraising challenge to raise £130,000 for charity in five days. From Monday 21st September and Friday 25th September Gleeds’ 56 international offices will come together to hold local fundraising events that are anticipated to touch over 80 different charities all over the world.
Teams from Gleeds’ offices in Warrington and Whitehaven have joined forces to host a charity triathlon around Lake Windermere. 65 fundraisers from Gleeds, who are usually desk-bound, will put their stamina and fitness levels to the test by running, cycling, swimming or kayaking around Lake Windermere to raise £10,000 for Cancer Research UK and the local mountain rescue.
Sir Steve Redgrave will join kayakers on the lake before giving a half-time pep talk to fundraisers. Commenting on the event, he said: “I can’t quite believe 15 years have flown by since the Sydney Olympics, but what a way to celebrate! It’s been a while since I’ve been out in the boat, so I’m really looking forward to supporting the Gleeds team with their challenge – particularly in such magnificent surroundings!”
Gleeds Director Stuart Ball, who has championed the triathlon fundraiser, said: “We’ve been training flat-out since January, practicing together during lunchbreaks and after work. Not only is it rewarding to know that we’re helping support two very worthy causes, the challenge has also had an incredible impact on morale, it’s really brought people together.”
