HALO Kilmarnock – a digital, cyber, and innovation park – is a net zero mixed-use development that offers residents and the wider community jobs, economic growth, skills development, clean energy, and housing.

On a 23-acre brownfield site, formerly the home of Jonnie Walker Scotch Whisky, the £63m urban regeneration project had clear goals: to inspire innovative thinking, stimulate digital learning, and provide a conducive environment for digital, manufacturing, and cyber businesses of all sizes across Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, and across Scotland.

At the heart of this was a 58,000 ft² Enterprise & Innovation Centre. Our role as lead consultant was to project and cost manage the works.

HALO’s Zero Carbon Vision

HALO has been collaborating with Scottish Power to create an industry-leading solar and electrical battery storage capacity and explore energy innovations for a lower-carbon society.

The project represented an opportunity for us to collectively respond to the climate emergency our society faces by delivering truly net zero carbon energy.

Achievements:

  • The first town centre net zero carbon energy project in Scotland – a Community Urban Village – setting the standard for circular economy low-carbon energy sites across the UK.
  • A market-leading centralised battery storage system and over 350m² of solar panels throughout the site, including solar car ports.
  • 100% renewable energy, electronic low-carbon heat pumps heating the HALO’s smart homes and commercial units.
  • Smart energy solutions such as e-mobility clubs, electric buses, cars, vans, and e-bikes, with electric chargers located throughout the site.

How we added value

From inception, through enabling works and masterplan, all the way to completion, our team liaised closely with the client to manage timelines and costs. In the end, we made sure the project completed on time and budget.

It is a vast amount of very complex work and I am not sure we would be where we are at the present time without [Gleeds’] commitment and dedication. Bill Stafford, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Ayrshire & Arran, Director on the HALO Kilmarnock Ltd. Board.
