Strategic estates support to deliver the requirements of the Strategic Defence and Security Review (SDSR) 2010

Context

SDSR 2010 set in motion a number of fundamental changes to the British Army that are still being worked through. The decision was taken to withdraw around 20,000 troops from bases in Germany. This, combined with a commitment to repatriate almost all remaining personnel from Afghanistan by 2015, a significant reduction in the size of the regular force and a fundamental review of the regimental structure, created a significant challenge for the Army’s estate in the UK. While the MOD and the Army worked through their operational planning, which ultimately resulted in the Army 2020 report published in 2012, it was recognised that planning for likely outcomes had to commence immediately given the imminence of significant troop repatriations.
