Kicking off the Gleeds Travel Scholarship Programme 2016

Gleeds’ Travel Scholarship Programme launches this week, with 6 employees heading off on a 1-2 week work placement overseas.

At Gleeds, we believe that travel often helps broaden people’s experience and career opportunities. Our employees told us that they agreed, but highlighted that moving your home and family in order to take up a post in an unknown country isn’t a decision to be taken lightly!

So in summer 2015 applications opened for Gleeds’ very first Travel Scholarship, designed to offer all Gleeds employees with an opportunity to secure a short term placement in an overseas office of their choice.

Following a rigorous application process, 6 employees were selected from our Leeds, London and Nottingham offices:

Gleeds consultant, Claire Geeson from the Leeds office is heading to India with Ned Roberts, director of facilities management based in Nottingham. Both will spend 2 weeks between Gleeds’ Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune offices. Claire’s travel scholarship project will focus on assessing the feasibility of developing a sustainability assurance service for clients in India, while Ned explores how facilities management services can be applied to the local market.

Quantity surveyors, Matthew Sumpter and Steven Begley, will be travelling to Shanghai to explore early cost planning. They will discover how the service differs between the UK and China, whilst gaining valuable experience in international marketing.

Commenting on the programme, Steven Begley, said: “I’m most excited about gaining a fresh perspective on my own area of work and returning to the UK with enhanced expertise. China is a completely different economy to the UK, so I can’t wait to network with overseas clients and colleagues and share these experiences on my return.”

Later on in the year Dave Marshall, Assistant Quantity Surveyor, will travel to New York and Mark De’ath, Executive Quantity Surveyor, to Prague.

The scholarship is a unique opportunity for staff from all backgrounds, disciplines and regions to learn from new experiences working overseas. It also helps facilitate a two-way knowledge exchange and long-lasting connections between candidates and their hosts, creating valuable overseas networks.
