Suzhou Village

China’s first high-end shopping village.

Gleeds was appointed to project manage and cost manage Value Retail's first shopping village in China. The 600 million RMB project covered a total construction area circa 60,000 sqm, including a 2-storey basement car park, offering 782 underground parking spaces.

Located on the western shore of Yangcheng Lake Peninsula in historic Suzhou, the village design concept is based on an Italian village and includes cobbled paving, rooftop pagodas, false balconies and wide pedestrianized streets to create a grandiose village feel.

The village offers over 80 world-class luxury and designer brands including Gucci, Prada and Mont Blanc. Each shop front façade is unique in design as all decorative tiles were hand-made and vary in size, style and pattern.

As this was the first high-end shopping village to be built in China, many of the contractors had no experience in this type of construction, meaning quality control was one of the biggest challenges the Gleeds team faced. This required a large amount of defect identification and management of contractor rectification.

Protecting the local environment

Located adjacent to the Yangcheng Lake and with a number of canals running through the development, there was a great deal of effort that went into surrounding water treatment techniques. As a result, a large artificial island was put in place, as well as the construction of a fountain leading to the centre of the water garden to anchor the development.
